Sponge Iron Powder
Sponge iron powder is a form of iron characterized by a porous, sponge-like structure, produced via the direct reduction process. This method reduces iron ore using reducing gases like carbon monoxide and hydrogen at temperatures below iron’s melting point (800-1200℃), then reduction products crushed into powders.
Truer sponge iron powders keep the purity 94-98.5% and irregular particle shape.
Sponge iron powders normally are used to manufacture sintered components, such as gears, bearings, gear hubs, shift slides due to its compressibility and green strength. It also is used for self-lubricating parts due to its porosity aiding in oil retention.
Comparing to water atomized iron powder, sponge iron powder is irregular and porous. Angular particles enhance green strength but may lower density.
